미묘한 몸 Sūkṣma-śarīra Subtle Body

‘미묘한 몸’ 또는 ‘신비체’라 불리는 용어가 있다. 산스크리트어로 sūkṣma-śarīra, 영어로 subtle body라 일컬어지며 말 그대로 몸에서 미묘함을 띠는, 완전히 육체적이지도 또 온전히 영적이지도 않은 몸과 그 상태를 가리킨다. 중간의, 겹쳐진, 뒤섞인, 오묘한 이 몸의 개념은 동양 사상과 종교(불교, 힌두교 등)에서 주요하게 다뤄진다. 미묘한 몸은 신체와 정신을 하나로 묶는 수행에서 파생되고, 이 수행이 지속되는 상태를 모두어 가리키며, 동양의 정신 수양 방식의 하나인 요가의 주요 개념이 되기도 한다.

한편 이 미묘한 몸은 어떤 아시아성을 담지한 단어이기도 하다. 서구권에서 으레 육신과 영혼을 분리해 바라보는 시각과 달리, 아시아권에서는 육신과 영혼을 합일된 것으로 바라보는 시각이 일변 익숙하기도 하다. 그 때문에 미묘한 몸은 곧 아시아적인 몸을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 법하다. 그렇다면 아시아적인 몸이란 어떤 걸까? 시각적으로 드러나는 어떤 색, 체형, 특정 신체 부위에서 도드라지는 모양을 일컬을 수도 있겠고, 몸을 움직이는 방식과 속도감 같은 것들로부터 구분될 수도 있고, 마음/정신에 깃든 무언가가 신체에서 발현되는 모습을 가리킬 수도 있을 테다. 앞선 아시아적인 몸이 될 만한 다양한 가능성들로부터, 어디에서부터 어디까지를 아시아적인 몸으로 명명할 수 있을까? 어떤 몸은 아시아적인 몸이 맞고, 어떤 몸은 아시아적인 몸이 아닌 걸까? ‘아시아적인 몸’이라는 말은 그 자체로 미묘하기 이를 데 없다. 그럼에도 우리가 아시아적인 몸에 대해 깊이 사유한 바가 없다면, 한 번 곱씹어 생각해 볼 만하지 않은가?    

전시는 ‘아시아적인 몸’이 무엇인지 궁금해 하며, 우리가 자기 자신으로 일평생 지니고 사는 또 살면서 만나 온 여러 아시아적인 몸들을 여기 가져와 본다. 전시는 몸을 그리거나, 몸을 만들거나, 몸의 일부를 재구성하는 작가들의 작업으로 구성된다. 모두 자신이 가진, 경험한, 만진 서로 다른 몸들을 보여주는데, 이 몸들은 하나같이 아시아적인 몸이다. 그리고  시각적으로 드러나는 일련의 몸과 함께 그 표면 아래에는 아시아적인 사유, 경험, 정신, 마음이 깃든다.

‘아시아적’이라는 말은 아주 크고 또 복잡하다. 여기 글자로 쉽게 새겨 넣는 것만큼 한 줄에 잘 나열되지 않고, 하나로 잘 뭉쳐지지 않는다. <미묘한 몸 Sūkṣma-śarīra Subtle Body>은 아시아적인 몸 뒤에 물음표와 느낌표를 동시에 띄운 채 전시장에 펼쳐 보이려 한다. 누군가 와서 이 몸들이 왜 아시아적인지 묻는다면, “아시아인이 그리고 만든 것이기 때문에 아시아적이다” 라고 말하면 사실 쉽고 간단한 답이겠지만, 전시는 어쩌면 우리가 표면의 몸 그 너머를 바라볼 수 있기를, 또 이 단순화를 문제시하기를, 눈앞에 놓인 몸을 그저 훑지만 말고 그 면면을 자세히 들여다보기를, 그로부터 자신의 몸이 가진 미묘함까지도 다시금 제대로 느껴보기를 바란다.

Sūkṣma-śarīra Subtle Body

The term 'subtle body' or 'mystical body', called sūkṣma-śarīra in Sanskrit, literally refers to a body and its states that are neither wholly physical nor wholly spiritual, but subtle in nature. This concept of the body as intermediate, overlapping, interwoven and subtle is mainly dealt with in Eastern thought and religion (Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.). The subtle body is derived from the practice of uniting the body and spirit as one, and refers to all the states in which this practice is sustained, being, for example, a major concept in yoga, one of the Eastern physical, mental and spiritual practices.

Furthermore, this subtle body is a term that also carries certain Asian chracteristics. Unlike the western view of body and soul as separate things, Asians are used to seeing/conceiving the body and soul as one. Because of that, the subtle body is a concept that can help to understand the Asian body. So, what is an 'Asian body' like? It could refer to a certain color, body type, or shape that visually stands out in  specific body parts, or it could be distinguished by things such as the way the body moves, or its pace, or it could refer to something that dwells in the mind/spirit and is expressed/manifested in the body. Considering all the possibilities of what an 'Asian body' could be, what would be the limits for its definition? Which bodies are Asian and which are not? The term 'Asian body' itself is nuanced. Nevertheless, if we haven't given it too much though, isn't it something worth thinking about?

The exhibition asks/wonders about what an 'Asian body' is, by bringing together various Asian bodies that we have lived in ourselves and encountered throughout our lives. The exhibition consists of works by artists who draw bodies, make bodies, or reconstruct body parts. They all show different bodies that they have had, experienced or touched, all of which are Asian. And beneath the surface of these visible bodies, dwell Asian thoughts, experiences, spirits, and minds.

The term 'Asian' is very large and complex. It can not be defined as easily as it can be written in one word/five letters, and it doesn't hold together as well. Subtle Body intends to place both a question mark and an exclamation point after the asian bodies on display at the exhibition space. If someone came and asked why these bodies are Asian, the easy and simple answer would be "because they were drawn and made by Asians", however, we aim to question the problems behind such a simplification. Therefore, we hope that this exhibition is an opportunity to not just glance at the body in front of us, but look closely at its surface, and to take this as a starting point for us to be fully able to appreciate the subtleties of our own bodies once again.

คำว่า '미묘한 몸 Sūkṣma-śarīra Subtle Body' หรือ กายละเอียด มีความหมายว่า ร่างกายที่ไม่สามารถมองเห็นด้วยตาเปล่าหรือไม่ได้เป็นเนื้อหนังมังสา แต่ก็ไม่ได้หมายถึงจิตวิญญาณแต่เพียงอย่างเดียว แนวคิดเรื่องกายละเอียดนี้ถูกมองในฐานะของการเป็นสื่อกลาง ทับซ้อน เชื่อมโยงกัน และมีความละเอียดอ่อนระหว่างกายเนื้อและดวงจิต ส่วนใหญ่นั้นมีความเชื่อมโยงกับแนวคิดและศาสนาของชาวตะวันออก เช่น ศาสนาพุทธและ ฮินดู ฯลฯ กายละเอียดนั้นถูกเชื่อว่าสร้างมาจากการฝึกรวมกายและวิญญาณให้เป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน ซึ่งถูกนำมาใช้เป็นแนวความคิดหลักของโยคะ ซึ่งสนใจในการฝึกทั้งทางร่างกายและทางจิตวิญญาณ นอกจากนี้ กายละเอียดยังเป็นคำที่แสดงลักษณะเฉพาะของชาวเอเชียด้วย ซึ่งมีความแตกต่างไปจากทัศนคติแบบชาวตะวันตกที่เชื่อว่าร่างกายและจิตวิญญาณเป็นสิ่งที่แยกออกจากกัน แต่สำหรับชาวเอเชียนั้นมองว่าร่างกายและจิตวิญญาณเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกัน ดังนั้น “กายละเอียด” จึงเป็นแนวคิดที่สามารถช่วยเข้าใจร่างกายของชาวเอเชียได้

แล้ว 'ร่างกายแบบชาวเอเชีย' เป็นอย่างไร? อาจเป็นเพียง สี รูปร่างลักษณะภายนอกที่เห็นเด่นชัดผ่านสายตา หรือสามารถแยกได้จากจังหวะท่าทางการเคลื่อนไหว หรืออาจรวมไปถึง จิตใจ วิญญาณ ที่แสดงออกผ่านทางกายเนื้อ เมื่อพิจารณาถึงความเป็นไปได้ทั้งหมดของสิ่งที่ 'ร่างกายแบบชาวเอเชีย' สามารถเป็นได้ ทำให้เกิดคำถามต่อมาว่า อะไรคือกรอบคำจำกัดความของร่างกายชาวเอเชีย ร่างกายไหนเป็นคนเอเชียและร่างกายไหนที่ไม่ใช่? คำว่า 'ร่างกายของชาวเอเชีย' นั้นมีความซับซ้อนในตัวเองอยู่แล้ว แต่ก็น่าสนใจไม่น้อยเลยที่จะเอามาขบคิดถึงคำนิยามของมัน

นิทรรศการนี้เป็นการตั้งคำถามถึง 'ร่างกายของชาวเอเชีย' คืออะไร โดยรวบรวมความเป็นร่างกายของชาวเอเชียต่างๆ ที่อยู่ในตัวเราและพบเจอมาตลอดชีวิต ภายในนิทรรศการประกอบด้วยผลงานของศิลปินที่แสดงออกผ่านการวาดภาพสรีระของมนุษย์ สร้างรูปร่างหรืออวัยวะบางส่วนขึ้นมาใหม่ โดยกลุ่มศิลปินชาวเอเชียได้นำเสนอร่างกายที่แตกต่างกันออกไปตามประสบการณ์ที่พวกเขาเคยสัมผัส และภายใต้ผิวหนังของเรือนร่างเหล่านี้เต็มไปด้วยความคิด ประสบการณ์ จิตวิญญาณ และจิตใจของชาวเอเชีย แต่คำว่า 'เอเชีย' นั้นกว้างและซับซ้อนมากเกินกว่าจะสามารถนิยามได้ด้วยเพียงคำเดียวหรือเพียงบางประโยค

นิทรรศการ “미묘한 몸 Sūkṣma-śarīra Subtle Body” ตั้งใจที่จะใส่ทั้งเครื่องหมายปรัศนีและอัศเจรีย์ตามหลังผลงานศิลปะที่เผยให้เห็นถึงร่างกายแบบชาวตะวันออกซึ่งจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการครั้งนี้ ถ้าหากตั้งคำถามว่าทำไมร่างเหล่านี้ถึงเป็นชาวเอเชีย อาจตอบสั้นๆได้ว่า "เพราะพวกมันถูกวาดและสร้างขึ้นโดยชาวเอเชีย" แต่ในการเหตุผลอย่างง่ายนั้น เราก็ยังต้องการที่จะสะท้อนให้มีการตั้งคำถามไปยังแง่มุมอื่นๆจากคำตอบที่เรียบง่ายอีกด้วย เราหวังว่านิทรรศการครั้งนี้จะเป็นโอกาสที่ไม่เพียงแต่ชมรูปลักษณะของกายหยาบที่อยู่ตรงหน้าเท่านั้น แต่ยังมองละเอียดลึกลงไปยังพื้นผิวเปลือกนอกของมนุษย์ และถือเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นให้เราได้กลับมาชื่นชมความละเอียดอ่อนของตัวเราเองได้อย่างเต็มที่อีกครั้ง
